Day 1 — Fes to Erg Chebbi: Through the Atlas and into the Sahara
Your driver meets you in Fes and the road south begins immediately. The route winds through the Middle Atlas — Morocco’s own Switzerland — past the town of Ifrane with its unusual alpine architecture and its cedar forests full of Barbary macaque. By midday you have crossed into the arid south, the landscape turning from green to ochre to gold. You reach Merzouga and the edge of Erg Chebbi in the late afternoon, in time to catch your first desert sunset over the dunes before dinner at camp.
Day 2 — Full Day at Erg Chebbi: Life in the Sahara
This day belongs entirely to the desert. Wake before sunrise to watch the dunes turn from blue to amber to blazing gold — one of the most quietly extraordinary things Morocco offers. After breakfast, the day is yours: ride dromedaries into the dunes with a professional camel guide, try sandboarding on the slip-faces, explore by 4WD, or search the rocky desert floor for fossils embedded in the limestone. In the afternoon, rest at camp as the heat peaks, then head back into the dunes for the second sunset. Dinner around the campfire under a sky without light pollution.
Day 3 — Erg Chebbi to Draa Valley via Todra Gorge
After breakfast, you leave the dunes behind and drive northwest into the dramatic geology of the south. Todra Gorge stops you in your tracks — the canyon walls rise over 300 metres from a narrow river floor, the light shifting colour as the sun moves overhead. After a walk through the gorge, the route continues through the volcanic Sahro mountains before descending into the Draa Valley — a ribbon of green palm groves threading through bare desert, framed by ancient adobe villages and crumbling ksour. You overnight in a traditional kasbah or luxury villa inside the palm groves.
Day 4 — Draa Valley to Marrakech via Aït Benhaddou
The final day delivers the most cinematic stretch of the entire route. You climb through the barren Ounila Valley to Aït Benhaddou — the UNESCO-listed ksar that has stood in for Jerusalem, ancient Rome, and Yunkai across decades of film and television. Free time to walk the site. Then the road climbs again to Kasbah Telouet, former seat of the powerful Glaoui family, where time seems to stop entirely. The last hours carry you over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres and down through the High Atlas into Marrakech.
