This secluded sand sea lies among the least visited parts of the 123,000-hectare protected reserve, positioned between the Anti-Atlas mountains and the Draa River Valley.

Erg Zahar is a remote sand dune area located in the deep Moroccan Sahara, within the Erg Chigaga dune system in the southeastern part of the country.
It lies in the province of Zagora, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, about 60 kilometers west of M’Hamid El Ghizlane, the last village before the open desert.
Unlike the more visited Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, Erg Zahar is known for its untouched and tranquil atmosphere, with vast golden dunes reaching impressive heights, some over 150 meters
